I
want to start this lesson by saying, “thank you” for visiting
my website. This is the first lesson I have posted, so I hope find it
informative and enjoyable.
I am fortunate to have been teaching drums for a number of years. One
of the problems students have come to me with is bass drum control.
They might have a lot of power, but have trouble with their independence
or their independence is good, but their foot sounds weak. Here are
six exercises I have come up with that have the snare drum line taken
out. They are in a rock format with 8th notes on the hi-hat, and the
bass drum is playing 16th notes displaced throughout the measure. These
exercises might help you if you are having some of the same problems.
When practicing these or any exercises, practice with a click, start
out playing slowly the gradually pick-up the tempo. Make sure you are
always counting, and have fun!
Keep checking back for future lessons. If you have any questions, feel
free send me an e-mail; I would love to hear from you. I hope to see
some of you while I'm on the road with SMB in 2006.
